Cristina got her PhD in Intelligent Systems at the University of Pittsburgh, and became a faculty member at UBC soon thereafter. Her research is at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, Human Computer Interaction and Cognitive Science, with the goal to contribute to a? user-centered AI capable of both performing useful tasks and being well accepted by their users. A key aspect of this endeavor is enabling AI systems to predict and monitor relevant properties of their users (e.g., states, skills, needs) and personalize the interaction accordingly, in a manner that maximizes both task performance as well user satisfaction. Towards this goal, Conati is especially interested in investigating how to enable AI technology to strike the right balance between providing accurate predictions and decision making? while? maintaining transparency, user control and trust. Cristina is a Senior Member of AAAI, and a ACM Distinguished member?

As of July 1, 2022, Dr. Barbara Bruno is a Visiting Researcher at the Faculty of Applied Computer Science, in the Department of Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. Her research focuses on Socially Assistive Robots and their use in applications such as elderly care and education.

Specific research interest she currently pursues include:?

  • can a robot tell in real time whether a child is learning, and intervene accordingly?
  • what mental modelling capabilities does a robot need to collaborate with a child on a learning activity?
  • are there (better) alternatives to human-inspired interaction means?

The overarching vision of her research is to bring Socially Assistive Robots at scale, by leveraging AI methods and exploring the potential offered by, for example, sonic interaction.

Dr. Tom Giraud was offering a multimedia project on "Computer-Assisted Therapy of Autism Patients" with a volume of 12 SWS per week over a period of two months - as an elective module for the bachelor's program in Computer Science and the new program in Medical Information Sciences and as a compulsory module for the bachelor's program in Computer Science and Multimedia. He is also working on a cooperation with the Dominikus Ringeisen Werk.

In collaboration with the psychologist Prof. Jacqueline Nadel, one of the most famous autism researchers worldwide, Dr. Giraud has developed a tangile virtual environment for the therapy of autism patients. This environment enables autistic children to perform actions together with a virtual character. This environment was developed at our chair. Within the multimedia project the use of this tangile virtual environment can be investigated in a facility with autistic patients.
