The research group focuses on the use of sensor data to monitor the condition of machines, plants and structures. For this purpose, measurement techniques are further developed on the one hand. On the other hand, the investigation of data streams with self-optimizing and adaptive algorithms is a focus of research. This allows the monitoring of technical systems in real time regarding their current operating state, but also regarding their structural integrity.

?

For this purpose, the research group deals with the use of different sensor systems for data acquisition. This includes the use of two-dimensional (imaging) methods (e.g. optical measuring systems, thermography) and one-dimensional methods (e.g. pressure and temperature sensors, acoustic sensors, dielectric sensors). Within the scope of our research, such sensor systems are technically combined with each other or combined within the scope of the resulting data streams. For a detailed understanding of the sensor systems, multiphysical simulation tools are also used to map the measurement principles in the model.

The data of such measuring systems are fed into a digital twin of a structure, component or process, for example. This is a model-based description of a real technical system. However, such a model is only adequate for prediction if it is validated and can cope with changing environmental conditions. We use modern, adaptive algorithms to implement the digital twin. However, the prediction is rarely deterministic, so that the data model has to be compared with reality constantly. This can be done by the continuous acquisition of sensor data, which provide a sufficient amount of information to describe the system state.

?

Furthermore, we research and use classical methods of non-destructive testing, such as X-ray computer tomography, ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission analysis, electromagnetic emission, guided wave testing, optical metrology and thermography. Here we also use multiphysical modeling methods to better understand the principles of the individual methods. In this context, we also contribute to improve the evaluation methods of the procedures and participate in the design of standards and guidelines.
