coLearn! - A Digicampus (Stud.IP) plugin for structuring small group cooperation phases in teaching

? University of Augsburg

The learning in small groups offers excellent opportunities to promote student learning. coLearn!, a new Digicampus (Stud.IP) plugin developed at the University of Augsburg in collaboration with the company data-quest as part of the project "Strengthening Competence Development through Digital, Authentic, and Feedback-Based Teaching-Learning Scenarios" (KodiLL), funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education, supports educators in planning and implementing structured small group cooperation phases in their lectures, seminars, or exercises.

Short introduction to coLearn!

If you want to get a very first impression of coLearn!, take a look at the following video (The provided information is exclusively in German).

?

?

coLearn! offers teachers the following options:

  1. Creation of tasks to be solved by students.
  2. Formation of small groups to work on tasks.
  3. Didactic structuring of small group cooperation by assigning roles, phases and specific instructions.
  4. Various possibilities for the teacher to monitor the cooperation process.

As soon as you have created a course in?Digicampus (Stud.IP), you will find coLearn!?(see illustration) in the list of available pluginsb?(via “More...” below the course title).

  • Activation of students: When learning in small groups, students are transformed from passive recipients of information into active problem solvers.
  • Promotion of knowledge acquisition: Empirical teaching and learning research has shown many times that learning in small groups can have a strongly positive effect on the acquisition of specialist knowledge.
  • Promotion of cooperation skills: Through active participation in small groups, students can acquire important interdisciplinary skills for effective and constructive collaboration - an important key competence.
  • Promoting fun and motivation: Learning in small groups is fun and promotes student motivation. coLearn! also supports teachers in designing cooperative learning in a way that promotes motivation.
  • Flexible and location-independent learning: coLearn! can be used both inside and outside of defined courses.

FAQ

coLearn! is particularly suitable for tasks that your students can complete to acquire skills that are important for their future careers. Tasks that you have created once can be used again and again in your teaching. Overall, coLearn! is extremely versatile and can be used equally well for synchronous and asynchronous teaching, for both large and small courses.

Here you will find various successfully tested learning scenarios. All of them come with a file in JSON format that you can import directly into coLearn! and use as the basis for your own scenario, modifying it as required.

<meta charset="UTF-8">Exported scenarios can always be imported into coLearn! The “Import scenario” function can be found under “Actions”.

Finished scenarios can be exported by clicking on the three dots next to the description in the “Scenario” view. You can then select the local storage location. From there, you can import the scenario into any of your courses.

?

? University of Augsburg

It is most likely not activated. To set a scenario to active, you must first switch to the “Manage scenarios” view. Here you can check the box under “Active”. Only then will it be displayed to the students!

? University of Augsburg

The description is shown to the students at the beginning of the scenario. It is suitable for briefly introducing the scenario, but also for providing important instructions or notes or embedding work materials that should be available to students throughout the scenario. However, no concrete instructions should be given that are specifically intended for certain roles or phases - these can be placed under “Roles” or “Phases”. Once the first phase has been completed, the description for the students is automatically hidden to save space. However, students can expand the field again at any time to have permanent access to the information it contains.

In each text input field of the text editor, you have the option of inserting a locally saved image via the image icon. Under “Files”, you have the option of uploading locally saved files.

Option 1: “All groups are in the same phase”
This variant of phase change is particularly suitable for synchronous scenarios, i.e. those that are integrated into an event session.
?
Option 2: “Groups go through the phases independently of each other”
This variant of phase change is particularly suitable for asynchronous scenarios, i.e. those that take place outside of an event session.

If you control the phase change as a teacher (phase transition: all groups are in the same phase), then click in coLearn! on “Phases” under the “Views” tab on the left. Here you can move all small groups simultaneously using the “Previous phase” or “Next phase” buttons.?
If the small groups carry out the phase change themselves (small groups go through phases independently of each other), then click on “Small groups” under the left tab “Views” on coLearn!. Here you can observe the phase progress and move the groups back and forth using the arrows in the “Phase” column.

Yes, you can do this via the “Phases” view. Here you can see which groups are currently in which phase. The numbers show you how many entries/edits are required and how many of them have already been completed. For example, if there is only one role with an input option and this person has not yet submitted anything, the arrow in the phase progress will show “0/1”; if this person then saves an entry, the phase progress will show “1/1”.

Using coLearn! requires a digital device. coLearn! works on smartphones, but using a tablet or notebook is much more convenient. Therefore, you should announce the synchronous use of coLearn! before the event so that students can bring appropriate devices with them. A stable internet connection, for example via eduroam or BayernWLAN, is also necessary. If you have the possibility, it is always a good idea to bring one or two backup devices.

First possibility: Students must save their entries before the phase change. If the entries are not saved before the phase change, they cannot be restored.
?
Second possibility: If several students have the same role, the entry of the last person to save is saved, all other entries of this role are no longer displayed.
?
Third possibility: If you move students to another, new small group, the entries of these moved persons remain in the old small group and are not transferred to the new small group.

On the left side in coLearn!, students will find the “Actions” tab, below is the symbol for the print preview, which can be saved as a PDF."

The “Configuration” and “Scenario completed” phases are two predefined phases. The “Configuration” phase allows you to continue editing the scenario while it is already displayed for the students, but has not yet started. The “Scenario completed” phase indicates to students that the scenario has been completed. In this phase, students can no longer make any entries, but can still view all phases and save results.

No, the roles are an essential part of successful group work in coLearn!.

See "Small groups" in the “Views” tab, here you have two options for viewing the saved entries of the respective small groups at any time - even while the scenario is still running:

  1. Click on the printer symbol on the far right under “Actions”. The print preview opens, which you can view and save as a PDF if required.
  2. Click on “Edits” below “Status”. A window opens with all the saved entries for the respective small group. You can neither save nor print this view.

If you insert an image, a bar appears when you click on the image. Here you can select the position and size of the image.

If you have created several scenarios in a course in coLearn!, you can select the desired scenario in the “Manage scenarios” tab on the right to edit it.
