AnglistenTheater's summer production 2025:

Euripides,?The Bacchae
a new version by David Greig
to be staged on June 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th
at 8 p.m. in H?rsaal II of the University
?
David Greig is a Scottish playwright and theatre director. His plays have been produced by most of the major theatre companies in the UK, and throughout Europe, the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia and Japan.?The Bacchae?premiered at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, in August 2007, in association with the Lyric Hammersmith.

In The Bacchae, Dionysus returns to his home city of Thebes and demands worship from the local people. He infatuates and enraptures the local women – the Bacchae of the play’s title. They abandon their everyday lives and gather in the mountains to worship Dionysus and perform his mysterious rites.?Pentheus, the King of Thebes, is Dionysus' antagonist and the catalyst for conflict in this drama. He bans all worship of the new god, refutes Dionysus’ claim to be divine and in doing so, seals his own fate.
